Job summary

GovCIO is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead design, development, and deployment of complex applications as part of the VA Data Modernization initiative. This role is fully remote within the United States and requires deep expertise in Java, Spring, REST, and cloud-native practices.

You will mentor engineers and drive architecture and CI/CD improvements across cross-functional teams. You will collaborate with stakeholders, define scalable solutions, and ensure security and compliance

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related field plus 12 years experience.
• Expertise with Java frameworks such as Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, and JPA.
• Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript.
• Deep understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns, and Java best practices.
• RESTful web services and API design.
• Experience with version control systems (Git using ADO or GitHub).
• Comfortable working in Agile/Scrum teams.
• Fluent English; both oral and written.
• Self-motivation, organization, time-management, and deductive problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product owners, champions, and stakeholders to define requirements into features within a modern SDLC.
• Lead Agile execution across the modernization team and provide technical leadership.
• Mentor mid-level engineers and guide architectural decisions.
• Design robust solutions with architects and product managers to meet business goals.
• Conduct thorough code reviews and enforce best practices.
• Optimize performance, scalability, and maintainability of applications.
• Design and implement CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, deployment.
• Work with DevOps to improve delivery pipelines and automation.
• Ensure security, reliability, and compliance through thoughtful design.
• Participate in system architecture discussions and key technical decisions.
• Investigate and resolve complex technical issues in dev/test/prod.
