Job summary

Penn Medicine is seeking a Senior Principal Enterprise Architect - Research Technology to lead the enterprise research technology strategy, define reference architectures, and ensure architectural coherence across our federated research landscape.

This senior individual contributor role balances researcher flexibility with enterprise sustainability, security, and compliance, working with IRB, NIH funding, and data governance partners to enable compliant translational research workflows.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Arts or Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
• 10+ years Information Technology experience.
• 5+ years as Enterprise Architect.
• 5+ years experience in academic medical center, university research, or life sciences research technology environments, with exposure to IRB, NIH funding, and data governance.

Responsibilities

• Defines and maintains the enterprise research technology architecture strategy and multi-year roadmap.
• Develops and publishes reference architectures, patterns, and standards for research technology platforms.
• Assess the current-state research technology landscape and develop a modernization path balancing researcher flexibility with enterprise sustainability.
• Defines the architecture for the research data lifecycle across ingest, curation, quality, analysis, sharing, and archiving.
• Establishes architectural guardrails and standards for research data governance and data sharing architectures for NIH-funded and multi-institutional collaborations.
• Architects technical integration pathways between research data environments and enterprise platforms to enable compliant translational research workflows.
• Ensures architectures meet regulatory requirements including HIPAA, Common Rule, NIH policies, and IRB standards.
• Partners with IRB, Research Compliance, and Privacy offices to embed privacy-by-design and compliance-by-design.
• Collaborates with enterprise Cloud, AI, Data, and Security to leverage enterprise platforms and avoid duplication.
• Serves as the primary enterprise architecture partner to research faculty, administration, grants and sponsored programs offices, and IT leaders.
• Develops governance mechanisms such as lightweight reviews and self-service decision frameworks for research environments.
• Monitors trends and uses scenario planning to keep architecture adaptable to funding, regulation, and platform evolution.
• Analyzes research business processes to produce architecture artifacts aligned with research objectives.

Education

Bachelor of Arts or Science Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related field

10+ years Information Technology experience

5+ years as Enterprise Architect
