Job summary

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Principal Environmental Planner to lead complex, multidisciplinary projects across the Gulf Coast and Southeast, with a focus on technical excellence, client success, and mentoring teams.

This regular, full-time role offers distributed (remote) work with travel. Base salary ranges from $114,594 to $149,320 per year, with a comprehensive benefits package including an ESOP, and opportunities for growth within a 100% employee-owned firm.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field (Master’s preferred).
• 10+ years of relevant experience.
• 5+ years of project management experience in a consulting environment, including proposal writing, scheduling, budget management, change management, meetings with clients/agencies, directing teams, and NEPA document preparation.
• Experience developing environmental permit applications and NEPA documents for interstate natural gas facilities regulated by FERC (preferred).
• Experience with agencies such as FERC, DOE, USACE, and/or similar state agencies in the Gulf Coast and surrounding states.
• Experience with project financials (budgets, forecasting, invoicing).
• Demonstrated client management and business development (seller-doer).
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead projects spanning infrastructure, energy, resilience, and environmental planning efforts.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Shape technical approaches, strengthen client relationships, and advance SWCA’s reputation for quality and innovation.
• Periodic travel throughout the region to support client engagement, project oversight, and team collaboration.
