Job summary

Root Insurance is seeking a Senior Security Engineer to lead our Data Security domain and shape how we protect sensitive data at scale across policyholder, customer, and corporate data. You will define standards for data classification, encryption, and access governance while partnering with data teams to embed security into pipelines and analytics.

You will drive the data security strategy, manage risk prioritization, and push for SOC 2 readiness, automation, and measurable security maturity

Qualifications

• 5+ years in data security, cloud security, security engineering, or privacy engineering.
• Hands-on in securing sensitive data in cloud environments across storage, processing, analytics.
• Experience embedding security in data platforms, pipelines, analytics workflows, or architectures.
• Familiar with HIPAA, GLBA, NYDFS, PCI DSS, NIST or similar frameworks; strong stakeholder communication.

Responsibilities

• Establish data security strategy and roadmap for sensitive data.
• Protect PII and confidential data across its full lifecycle.
• Set standards for classification, encryption, key management, masking, and sharing.
• Design data access governance with least privilege, RBAC/ABAC, reviews.
• Embed security controls into data pipelines, warehouses, and data lakes.
• Improve visibility into sensitive data stores and flows; monitor with DLP tooling.
• Define secure backup, recovery, and resilience requirements.
• Translate regulatory and business needs into practical controls.
• Lead cross-functional prioritization and SOC 2 readiness.
• Automate security workflows via scripting, policy-as-code, and AI tools.
• Develop playbooks, architectures, and reusable patterns.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident response.
• Communicate risks and recommendations to engineers and leadership.
• Coach teams on secure data handling and security maturity.
