Job summary

We Build Progress seeks a Communications Director to lead strategies for two organizations, We Build Progress and PCAF. You will drive audience engagement, oversee digital channels, and guide executive communications in a fast-paced nonprofit setting.

You will supervise staff, manage partners and vendors, and align communications with advocacy priorities while safeguarding the organizations' distinct voices.

Qualifications

• Eight+ years of progressively responsible communications experience with senior executives and multiple functions.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, public policy, or related field.
• Experience developing integrated communications strategies that advance organizational goals and strengthen branding.
• Experience advising executives on sensitive issues, reputational risks, and rapid-response opportunities.
• Strong strategic judgment, political acumen, and ability to translate policy into clear content.
• Exceptional writing/editing skills across formats and channels.
• Experience leading media relations and digital channels (email, websites, social media).
• Experience supervising staff and managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
• Ability to work evenings/weekends as needed for events.

Responsibilities

• Develop an integrated communications strategy and editorial calendar for two organizations.
• Maintain distinct voices for We Build Progress and PCAF while aligning storytelling where appropriate.
• Lead external messaging, brand strategy, and cross-channel content across initiatives and events.
• Plan comms for initiatives, campaigns, policy priorities, and major announcements.
• Expand reach of newsletters, briefings, toolkits, and other assets.
• Embed a communications lens into program design, partnerships, and events.
• Provide guidance on written, visual, and multimedia content, ensuring accessibility and accuracy.
• Supervise the Digital & Content Communications Specialist and manage vendors.
• Establish metrics and regular reporting on growth, engagement, and media reach.
• Develop crisis and rapid-response plans and prepare leaders for media opportunities.
