Job summary

Affirm seeks an experienced senior backend engineer to set technical strategy for a team building scalable systems in a remote-first environment. You will drive architecture, collaborate with product, design and analytics, and own operational processes to keep services reliable and performant.

You will lead design reviews, promote code quality, and mentor engineers, while delivering major features and overseeing distributed systems on AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience with AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes.
• Experience developing consumer experiences using React.
• 2+ years in search or related recommendation engines.
• Ability to write high quality, maintainable code and handle ambiguity.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long timescale.
• Collaborate with product management, design & analytics across the lifecycle.
• Define and advocate technical solutions and operational processes.
• Ensure on-call readiness, monitoring, playbooks and incident response.
• Set code review and design standards and share learnings beyond the team.
• Develop talent through feedback and mentoring.
