Job summary

Peraton seeks a Documentation & Accessibility Lead to drive documentation strategy, Section 508 compliance, AT testing, and automation for the CMS Medicare Systems Solutions program. This remote role leads a distributed team of technical writers and interfaces with CMS stakeholders and enterprise compliance reviewers.

Qualifications

• Education: 8 years with a BS/BA degree or 12 years of experience in lieu of a degree.
• 8+ years of progressive technical writing and documentation experience, including 3+ years in a lead or senior role on a federal IT program.
• Section 508 certification or equivalent expertise with ability to certify within 90 days of hire.
• Hands-on knowledge of assistive technologies used in federal computing environments.
• Experience with at least two automated accessibility testing tools.
• Experience producing and managing technical documentation for federal government IT programs.
• Expert proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro; Confluence or SharePoint.
• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and integrating documentation into sprints.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication; ability to translate complex technical content.
• Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship required; ability to obtain/maintain federal Public Trust clearance.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the CMSS Documentation Management Plan with standards, templates, naming conventions, version control, and lifecycle policies.
• Lead and mentor technical writers across CMSS workstreams (FISS, MCS, CWF, DMES).
• Serve as the primary CMS submission contact for documentation deliverables.
• Align documentation roadmap with sprint cycles, release schedules, and CMS reporting.
• Collaborate with Program Management, Architecture & Engineering, and Operations to integrate documentation into delivery workflows.
• Act as Section 508 Program Lead ensuring all documents and interfaces meet standards.
• Conduct 508 conformance reviews and develop 508 testing protocols and remediation playbooks.
• Provide training on accessible content creation and coordinate with CMS 508 office.
• Maintain a compliance log and issue tracking for remediation.
• Perform AT testing, validate outputs against real-world AT usage, and document results.
• Stay current on AT updates and assist with staff guidance on AT compatibility.
• Identify and implement tools/workflows to automate documentation production, including AI-assisted drafting.
• Integrate automated accessibility testing tools into review workflows and pilot docs-as-code approaches.
• Publish multi-format output using structured content authoring and single-source publishing.
• Track documentation delivery metrics and report to program leadership.
