Job summary

Environmental Defense Fund, Inc. (EDF) invites applications for a Spring 2027 internship focused on seabird bycatch and international fisheries management. The 16-week program is remote in the U.S.

with optional hybrid offices in New York, Austin, Boulder, Boston, Raleigh, San Francisco, or Washington, D.C. The intern will perform data processing, spatial analyses, and quantitative modelling under EDF scientists, gaining hands-on experience for policy-relevant conservation.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed a master's or doctoral degree in ecology, marine science, conservation biology, environmental science, geography, data science, or a related quantitative field.
• Proficiency in R programming (or Python skills and a willingness to work in R).
• Demonstrated experience conducting spatial analyses in R with geospatial data.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills and ability to troubleshoot code.
• Experience reviewing scientific literature to inform research questions and analytical approaches.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and ability to work independently or in a team.

Responsibilities

• Collate, process, and map seabird distribution and fisheries effort data.
• Review literature to compile species-specific catchability and life-history data.
• Review regulations and evaluate mitigation and management scenarios.
• Develop and implement R code to model management scenarios.
• Support sensitivity analyses and assess parameter uncertainty.
• Incorporate observed bycatch data to estimate seabird saves.
• Prepare figures, maps, reports, and policy recommendations.
• Communicate with collaborators and IATTC staff for data and policy engagement.
• Contribute to EDF culture and inclusivity goals.
