The role focuses on seabird bycatch reductions using quantitative methods. The intern will gain experience in data processing, spatial analysis, and modelling under EDF scientists, with mentorship and collaboration across NGOs and IATTC.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed a master's or doctoral degree in a quantitative environmental field.
• Strong proficiency in R (or Python) with data processing and analysis experience.
• Experience with spatial analyses using geospatial data and packages in R.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work independently and in a team.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Collate and map seabird distributions and fisheries effort datasets to assess overlaps.
• Review literature to estimate species-specific catchability and mitigation effectiveness.
• Develop and evaluate alternative bycatch mitigation scenarios with EDF scientists.
• Implement R code to model management scenarios and assess outcomes.
• Support sensitivity analyses and report findings to policy stakeholders.
• Prepare figures and technical reports for fisheries management decisions.
• Collaborate with partners and communicate results to diverse audiences.
