Job summary

Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) invites students and graduates to an internship focused on seabird bycatch and international fisheries governance. The role emphasizes quantitative data analysis, spatial modelling, and policy-relevant reporting.

The intern will work closely with EDF scientists, process seabird distribution data, and explore mitigation scenarios using R and Python. Mentorship is provided across the Ocean Science Team with opportunities to collaborate with partner NGOs and IATTC

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed a master's or doctoral degree in a quantitative field.

Responsibilities

• Collate, process, and map seabird distribution and fisheries effort data to assess spatiotemporal patterns.
• Review literature to compile species-specific catchability and life-history parameters.
• Develop and evaluate bycatch mitigation and management scenarios with EDF scientists.
• Develop, refine, and implement R code to model management scenarios.
• Support sensitivity analyses to evaluate model assumptions and uncertainty.
• Contribute to figures, maps, reports, and policy-relevant recommendations.
• Communicate with collaborators, data holders, and IATTC staff to support data acquisition and policy engagement.
