Job summary

First American seeks a Commercial Underwriting Counsel to join its National Commercial Services. You will provide underwriting support for title insurance commitments and policies, applying standards within delegated authority, and guiding settlement services across real estate transactions.

The role requires a law degree, active bar license, and 5–7 years of title insurance or equivalent commercial experience.

Qualifications

• 5 to 7 years of experience underwriting title insurance or comparable law firm experience with commercial focus.
• Strong knowledge of real estate law and regulations at federal and state levels.
• Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate, build relationships, and convey difficult information tactfully.

Responsibilities

• Provide underwriting support, counsel, and authorization to personnel and customers for title insurance commitments and policies.
• Apply underwriting standards within delegated authority limits.
• Guide personnel on real estate settlement services performance.
• Underwrite title insurance issuance in line with standards.
• Provide guidance on escrow real estate settlement services.
• Issue underwriting standards in accordance with company processes.
• Communicate underwriting and settlement information to the team.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
