Ballotpedia is seeking a full-time, 100% remote Policy Staff Writer to join our Policy Team. You will write encyclopedic pages and promotional content to explain complex policy terms, court cases, and reforms for a broad audience, and you will research, compile, and present information in spreadsheets and databases.

The role balances writing and research with a focus on neutrality, accuracy, and reader clarity.

Qualifications

• A passion for Ballotpedia’s mission.
• Knowledge of the United States political system.
• Interest in U.S. policy with familiarity of federal/state lawmaking a plus.
• Desire to work collaboratively across departments.
• Comfort seeking and responding to feedback.
• Ability to innovate and solve problems proactively.
• Familiarity with AI tools to boost productivity.
• Knowledge of administrative state and public assistance programs preferred.

Responsibilities

• Generate content about complex topics in a neutral, clear, and concise manner.
• Read extensively about policy coverage areas to become a content expert.
• Create and edit articles on court cases, laws, and key terms.
• Identify and curate arguments for and against proposed policy changes.
• Track news events to keep policy coverage up to date.
• Read scholarly work and integrate findings into content.
• Promote compelling story ideas with strong headlines.
• Draft presentations and lead webinars incorporating feedback.
• Contribute ideas to recurring newsletters and content.
• Produce educational outreach like Learning Journeys and Learning Expeditions.
• Contribute to topical webinars on breaking news.
• Proofread content effectively and consistently.
• Analyze court decisions and legislation across states for policy trends.
• Attend related events when needed.
