Job summary

Carroll Center for the Blind, Newton, MA, seeks an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to support blind and visually impaired students aged 3 to 21 across schools, homes, and communities. You will conduct assessments, train independence in travel, and document progress for IEP/rehab plans.

ACVREP certification or eligibility, or enrollment in Vision Studies Master’s, is required along with strong communication and collaboration skills to work with families, educators, and therapists.

Qualifications

  • ACVREP certification required, or eligibility for certification, or active enrollment in a Vision Studies Master’s program.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide written documentation of progress and recommend tools/adaptations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Orientation & Mobility assessments focusing on client needs over time.
  • Provide consultation to families, educators, and other professionals, and recommend home/school/work adaptations.
  • Instruct in indoor/outdoor travel skills and transportation use for independence.
  • Develop skills for safe, efficient travel aligned with program goals and plans.
  • Work in schools, homes, and communities.
  • Provide written documentation of progress and recommended tools.
