Job summary

The American Red Cross is seeking a Medical Director to lead transfusion medicine, blood banking, and patient services with a focus on safety, quality, and clinician collaboration. This remote role requires periodic onsite presence and regional travel to support hospital partners and blood center operations.

Applicants should have an MD/DO with transfusion medicine expertise, board certification eligibility, and extensive leadership experience in clinical programs and research.

Qualifications

• MD/DO with post-graduate training in blood banking/transfusion medicine.
• Board certification or eligibility in internal medicine, pediatrics, or clinical pathology.
• Board certification or eligibility in transfusion medicine or equivalent is highly desirable.
• Current state licenses and specialty boards may be required.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical consultation in transfusion medicine, blood banking and patient services to hospital customers.
• Coordinate continuing medical education on safe use of blood components with external customers and internal audiences.
• Direct patient service programs including therapeutic apheresis and stem cell collection.
• Oversee regulated blood center operations including donor management and adverse reactions.
• Develop procedures and policies for donor eligibility, safety, and transfusion practice.
• Serve as CLIA Laboratory Director for regulated collection activities and related labs.
• Investigate donor complications and transfusion-related concerns with timely reporting.
