Job summary

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; graduate from specialty training program preferred.
• Relevant coding certification within 12 months after hire.
• Minimum of 1 year related work experience required.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records to identify principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures.
• Detail review of laboratory, radiology, discharge summaries and progress notes to ensure coding accuracy.
• Translate provider documentation into coded form using standard codes.
• Use Encoder software to determine codes for diagnoses and procedures.
• Determine sequencing to maximize reimbursement and assign DRGs.
• Query physicians to clarify documentation when needed for accurate coding.
• Stay current with coding guidelines and recommend changes to improve data management.
• Communicate new diagnoses or technologies for inclusion in coding guidelines.
