Island Tug & Barge Co. is seeking a full-time Engineer to oversee mechanical and technical performance of assigned vessels from a remote location.

The role emphasizes safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance, coordinating maintenance with captains and shore teams. The Engineer will monitor engines, propulsion, generators, and auxiliary equipment, and will schedule inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance while documenting activities to standards.

Qualifications

• Strong marine engineering and mechanical skills.
• Experience with diesel engines and propulsion on commercial vessels.
• Knowledge of USCG requirements, vessel inspections, and environmental regs.
• Able to troubleshoot, diagnose, and plan preventive maintenance.
• Clear communication with captains, deck crews, shore teams.
• Experience maintaining maintenance logs in digital systems.
• USCG credentials or equivalent are beneficial; tug/barge experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and maintain engines, propulsion, generators, and auxiliary equipment.
• Coordinate scheduled inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance.
• Collaborate with captains and deck crews to troubleshoot mechanical issues.
• Document maintenance activities per company and regulatory standards.
• Communicate with shore-based management and vendors; access to parts.
• Occasional on-site or vessel visits as needed.
