Job summary

The American Heart Association is offering a remote Data Science internship focused on large language models, generative AI, and agentic AI. You’ll work 20-25 hours weekly from 1/25/27 to 5/7/27, gaining hands-on experience in ML and AI within a nonprofit health organization.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Computer Science, AI, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, Public Health, or related.
• Coursework or project experience with LLMs, generative AI, NLP, retrieval-augmented generation, or AI agents.
• Experience using APIs or open-source frameworks to build and test LLM apps.
• Programming in Python and familiarity with ML libraries.
• Ability to apply core LLM concepts, prompt design, and evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Support the design and development of LLM-powered applications and agentic AI workflows for clinical, biomedical, and operational research use cases.
• Apply LLMs to modeling and analytical tasks, including information extraction, classification, summarization, QA, and workflow orchestration.
• Experiment with prompts, structured outputs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, vector search, tools, and multi-step agent workflows.
• Prepare, clean, organize, and document data used in LLM and generative AI experiments.
• Develop reproducible prototypes using Python and approved AI/ML tools.
• Design and perform evaluations of LLM systems with clear criteria and quantitative/qualitative measures.
• Validate, analyze errors, test robustness, and compare model/workflow options.
• Assess issues like hallucination, bias, privacy, and reproducibility.
• Document methods, prompts, results, limitations, and improvements.
• Contribute to technical docs, presentations, abstracts, and cross-functional discussions.
