Job summary

Nationwide IT Services seeks a hands-on Linux Systems & DevOps Engineer to support USGS ShakeAlert. Remote, but candidates must reside in the United States and pass government background checks. Strong Linux and Ansible focus with networking, monitoring, security, and scripting responsibilities across distributed real-time systems.

The role covers patching, hardening, database work, CI/CD using GitLab, and collaboration with scientists and engineers to ensure reliable operations.

Qualifications

• Hands-on Linux administration in production/operational environments.
• Experience with RHEL/CentOS/Rocky Linux or equivalent.
• Hands-on Ansible configuration and automation experience.
• Install, patch, secure, maintain, monitor and troubleshoot Linux servers.
• Configure and troubleshoot network infrastructure, switches, routers, firewalls.
• Read and write scripts; basic automation and monitoring skills.
• Knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, routing, VPNs, and firewalls.
• Experience with Git/GitLab in CI/CD workflows.
• Understanding of relational databases and SQL queries.
• US residency and ability to obtain required government credentials.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, administer, patch, secure, monitor, and troubleshoot Linux systems.
• Use Ansible to configure systems and automate routine administration.
• Configure and troubleshoot network switches, routers, firewalls, and connectivity.
• Support LAN/WAN and telemetry-connected systems delivering real-time data.
• Monitor servers, services, processes, and health indicators; adjust monitoring as needed.
• Develop and maintain scripts and automation for routine ops.
• Install, configure, operate, and maintain software packages and services.
• Work with relational databases, including SQL queries and basic admin tasks.
• Support Linux security, patching, access controls, and vulnerability remediation.
• Assist with A&A activities by providing technical information and evidence.
• Use Git/GitLab for deployment workflows and source control.
• Document changes and maintain operational docs; collaborate across teams.
