Nationwide IT Services is seeking a Senior Linux Systems Engineer to support USGS mission-critical systems. This 100% remote role emphasizes Linux fundamentals, troubleshooting, and cross-functional collaboration across applications, databases, networking, automation, and security.

You will own incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and coordination with developers, network engineers, and security staff. A strong problem-solving mindset is essential.

Qualifications

• Strong hands-on Linux systems administration experience in enterprise/production environments.
• Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex technical problems and perform root-cause analysis.
• Strong understanding of Linux services, processes, logs, filesystems, permissions, packages, configuration, and general system operations.
• Experience performing system maintenance, patching, configuration, troubleshooting, and operational support.
• Experience using monitoring and logging information to investigate system or application behavior.
• Hands-on scripting or automation experience.
• Ability to read and follow application or automation code to support troubleshooting and communicate with developers.
• Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, ports, routing, firewalls).
• Relational databases familiarity (installation/configuration, connectivity, basic SQL).
• Familiarity with system security concepts like patching, access controls, host firewalls, vulnerability remediation.
• Willingness to investigate unfamiliar technologies across domains.
• Ability to communicate findings clearly and collaborate with specialists.

Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain, troubleshoot, and support Linux-based production, development, test, and supporting infrastructure.
• Investigate system and application problems through logs, configuration, monitoring data, and network behavior.
• Perform root-cause analysis and drive problems toward resolution.
• Determine escalation needs to software developers, network engineers, or security personnel.
• Perform Linux system maintenance, patching, configuration, and service management.
• Support system security and hardening activities including vulnerability remediation.
• Use and maintain automation and configuration-management capabilities.
• Work with monitoring systems to understand system health and modify checks as needed.
• Support relational databases at an operational level (installation, connectivity, basic SQL).
• Support messaging and event-driven infrastructure for data movement between systems and apps.
• Read application/automation code to troubleshoot and communicate findings to developers.
• Develop or modify scripts to support administration, troubleshooting, monitoring, and operations.
• Troubleshoot connectivity using networking fundamentals.
• Collaborate with staff across systems, software development, networking, and security to resolve cross-boundary issues.
• Document findings, configurations, troubleshooting steps, and procedures.
