Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Lead AI/ML Engineer within Optum Rx to design, develop, and scale advanced AI/ML systems powering our core conversational chatbot platform. You will be the technical lead for end-to-end implementation across cross-functional teams.

Remote work is available nationwide, with in-office commitment four days weekly for Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area hires. Expect collaboration with enterprise architecture and major vendors.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience using Python, Java, Scala, or similar languages.
• 3+ years designing, training, and deploying ML or DL models into production.
• 2+ years building MLOps frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized deployments.
• 2+ years writing SQL and working with MongoDB or similar databases.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and production deployment of AI/ML solutions for enterprise systems.
• Serve as a technical lead for complex AI/ML initiatives and end-to-end implementation.
• Use enterprise AI tools to streamline workflows and drive continuous improvement.
• Apply ML, DL, statistics, and experimentation to build data-driven solutions.
• Partner with product, business, and engineering to identify high-value AI use cases.
• Lead solution architecture and design with Enterprise Architecture and vendors.
• Maintain architecture diagrams for the conversational chatbot platform.
• Promote modern engineering practices, observability, and CI/CD adoption for AI systems.
• Champion AI/MLOps best practices, ensuring production-ready pipelines.
• Influence architectural decisions balancing performance, security, and maintainability.
• Ensure enterprise security and privacy standards; mentor engineers.
