Job summary

Universal Health Services (UHS) is seeking an Inpatient Coder for our Appeals department in the Western Region. The DRG Coder will analyze third-party coding audits, draft appeal letters, and review clinical care levels to address denials. This role can be remote or in-office.

Ideal candidates will have CCS and IP DRG experience, 1–3 years coding, and strong MS Office proficiency, with familiarity in healthcare billing and coding compliance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• CCS certification required; other certifications (CCA, CCS-P, CPC, RHIT, RHIA) preferred.
• IP DRG experience or similar DRG auditing background is expected.
• 1–3 years coding experience; 3–5 years preferred.
• Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Understanding of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, and medical terminology.

Responsibilities

• Perform DRG validation reviews in response to third-party audits.
• Review audit findings letters to understand audited codes and payer rationale.
• Analyze medical records to obtain supporting clinical documentation.
• Write detailed appeal letters to third-party payers based on clinical findings.
• Update DRGs or billed diagnoses based on clinical reviews; assign audits as needed.
• Provide analysis and support to the appeals department and customer service.
