Job summary

Topstep is seeking a GL Manager in Chicago to lead a 3–5 person accounting team, owning payroll, AP, equity, and close processes. You will review work of the Senior GL Accountants and ensure accuracy, timeliness, and audit-readiness.

The role collaborates with HR, Legal, Tax, and cross-functional teams as the finance organization scales. As the team evolves, ownership may expand to intercompany, cash/bank, leases, or other balance sheet areas, with a focus on process discipline and continuous

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 6-8+ years accounting experience including month-end close.
• 2+ years managing accounting staff.
• Experience with payroll accounting, AP, and COGS vs SG&A.
• Experience with NetSuite or similar ERP.
• Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP).
• CPA or active pursuit preferred.

Responsibilities

• Directly manage two Senior GL Accountants and the AP Specialist.
• Provide second-level review of work and ensure quality.
• Oversee payroll accounting, journals, and reconciliations.
• Oversee AP coding accuracy and vendor payouts.
• Perform monthly flux/variance analysis including COGS vs SG&A.
• Prepare and maintain monthly equity rollforwards.
• Review balance sheet reconciliations and close processes.
• Ensure audit-readiness and internal controls.
