Job summary

Kobo is seeking a Frontend Web Application Developer for a full-time, remote role averaging 35–40 hours per week. You will work on a large, live web application used by thousands of organizations worldwide, collaborating with a team to write robust client-side code and maintain tests and documentation.

Requirements include TypeScript, React, and Git proficiency, experience with legacy Backbone/CoffeeScript, and a strong code-review mindset.

Qualifications

• Experience writing, deploying, and maintaining client-side code for real-world, API-driven SPAs.
• Proficiency with TypeScript, React, styling, state management, and HTTP data exchange.
• Experience with legacy technologies such as Backbone and CoffeeScript.
• Recent experience performing code reviews.
• Ability to independently set up and troubleshoot a local development environment.
• Interest in data collection, humanitarian contexts, and platform improvement.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English and Git fluency.
• Overlap with Eastern time zone working hours.
• Availability of at least 30 hours per week, preferably 35+.

Responsibilities

• Search and read a large code base to understand behavior and conventions.
• Suggest improvements aligned with modern best practices.
• Write robust, concise, and reusable code with tests and documentation.
• Review other developers' code and provide constructive feedback.
• Incorporate feedback from code reviews to improve skills and align with team standards.
• Use AI-assisted development tools while ensuring code quality.
• Investigate bug reports and create fixes or action plans.
• Plan and organize work into manageable tasks.
• Attend regular video check-ins with the technical team.
• Communicate with the public via forums, issue trackers, etc.
• Contribute to design and architectural discussions.
• Perform other duties as directed by the lead developer.
