Job summary

SMX is seeking a Cyber Security Engineer to provide security engineering, compliance, and risk management for cloud environments aligned with NIST SP 800-53, FedRAMP, and DoD IL4-6 requirements. This remote role supports a Herndon, VA based team and focuses on evidence collection, control validation, and automation to improve compliance efficiency.

The role requires five+ years in cybersecurity with federal cloud security experience, knowledge of RMF, and CISSP/CGRC/CAP/CISM or equivalent certs.

Qualifications

• Strong analytical and documentation skills focused on secure and compliant outcomes.
• Ability to translate federal security requirements into practical technical controls and operational processes.
• Experience with RMF, FedRAMP authorization, and DoD security requirements.
• U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a Secret or higher clearance.
• Five+ years of cybersecurity, including federal cloud security engineering, information assurance, RMF, or ISSO functions.
• Familiarity with NIST SP 800-53 Rev.5, FedRAMP Moderate/High, DoD IL4-6 overlays, RMF.

Responsibilities

• Provide cybersecurity engineering and compliance support for FedRAMP and DoD-authorized cloud environments (IL4-6).
• Advise partners and customers on federal security requirements, authorization strategies, and audit readiness.
• Develop, review, and maintain SSPs, SAPs, SARs, POA&Ms, FedRAMP appendices, and supporting evidence.
• Support authorization planning, gap assessments, control validation, and remediation planning.
• Leverage GRC platforms, APIs, scripts, and automation to streamline compliance workflows.
