Job summary

Peraton is seeking a Junior Data Engineer to join its DoS Diplomatic Security Cyber Mission (DSCM) program in Beltsville, MD, with hybrid work options. The role supports the Cyber Event Data Node (CEDN) platform to collect, process, and distribute cybersecurity data for operational and analytical use.

You will collaborate with system owners, cybersecurity analysts, architects, and engineers to identify data sources, define requirements, and build data pipelines using Cribl and Databricks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; 1–2 years experience; four years substitution permitted.
• One of listed certifications required (e.g., CCNA Security, CEH, CISSP, CySA+).
• Foundational experience with data engineering and ETL/ELT processes.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Familiarity with JSON/CSV/XML and other data formats.
• Knowledge of databases, data lakes, pipelines, metadata, and data lifecycle.
• Basic cloud knowledge.
• Ability to document configurations and procedures clearly.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to learn new platforms and mentor others.
• U.S. citizenship and active Secret clearance; potential to Top Secret.

Responsibilities

• Support onboarding new cybersecurity systems and data sources into the CEDN environment.
• Collaborate with system owners and engineers to identify data sources, formats, schemas, volumes, and use cases.
• Configure and maintain Cribl pipelines for data collection, routing, parsing, transformation, enrichment, and replay.
• Assist with developing and maintaining Databricks data pipelines across Delta Lake layers.
• Develop Python, SQL, and scripting solutions to automate ingestion, transformation, validation, and reporting.
• Map structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data into standardized schemas and security data models.
• Conduct data-quality checks for completeness, accuracy, timeliness, and proper formatting.
• Troubleshoot ingestion failures, schema changes, pipeline errors, latency, and data-flow issues.
• Support integrations with Splunk Cloud, ServiceNow, Power BI, Tableau, and other authorized consumers.
• Apply metadata, tagging, access controls, and data-handling requirements for secured environments.
• Monitor pipeline health, throughput, storage usage, and performance; identify optimization opportunities.
• Create onboarding checklists, data-flow diagrams, interface docs, test plans, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides.
• Participate in testing and validation before new data sources are released to production.
• Work within change-management and SDLC processes.
• Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, threat analysts, and stakeholders to translate needs into data products.
• Provide knowledge transfer and basic guidance to data owners and platform users.
