Job summary

Tiello LLC is seeking a Director of Steel Operations in Boise, ID, to provide strategic leadership for commercial structural steel projects from preconstruction through closeout. Qualifications

Company Overview:

Tiello has partnered with a highly successful Structural Steel Engineering Firm in the Mountain West on their search for a Director of Steel Operations for commercial structural steel fabrication and erection projects.

Role Summary:

The Director of Steel Operations will provide strategic leadership and oversight for construction operations, guiding structural steel projects from preconstruction through execution and closeout. This individual will lead project management teams, oversee field operations, and ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong structural steel construction background, extensive experience with fabrication and erection, and a proven track record leading complex projects and multidisciplinary teams. This individual will work closely with estimating, engineering, detailing, fabrication, and erection teams while serving as a key liaison with owners, general contractors, engineers, subcontractors, and trade partners.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership for the construction division and align operational objectives with company goals

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, general contractors, engineers, subcontractors, and trade partners
  • Partner with estimating and preconstruction teams to identify constructability opportunities, connection efficiencies, and value engineering solutions
  • Provide expertise regarding erection methodologies, crane planning, site logistics, sequencing, and field execution strategies
  • Review design models, shop drawings, and submittals to evaluate field feasibility and minimize RFIs and rework
  • Ensure projects comply with engineering requirements, contract documents, project specifications, safety standards, and applicable codes
  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, labor productivity, resource allocation, and overall financial performance
  • Identify and resolve project challenges involving safety, scheduling, engineering, quality, manpower, and resources
  • Monitor workforce utilization and proactively balance workloads across projects
  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures for structural steel fabrication and erection activities
  • Leverage BIM, 3D modeling, laser scanning, and other digital construction technologies to improve project delivery
  • Standardize project management and detailing procedures in alignment with company best practices
  • Audit project execution to ensure compliance with quality and operational standards
  • Lead corrective action and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Mentor, coach, and develop project managers, detailers, and construction personnel
  • Conduct performance evaluations and identify opportunities for employee growth and advancement
  • Support succession planning and development of future construction leadership
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, safety, and professional development
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field required
  • Master's degree preferred
  • 10+ years of structural steel erection management experience
  • 5+ years of leadership experience within the structural steel industry
  • Proven experience managing large-scale commercial, industrial, infrastructure, or similarly complex structural steel projects
  • Extensive knowledge of structural steel fabrication and erection practices
  • Strong understanding of structural systems, welding procedures, bolting requirements, erection methodologies, and steel construction processes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction codes, industry standards, and safety regulations
  • Experience leading large, multidisciplinary project teams
  • Strong understanding of project financial management, forecasting, budgeting, and labor productivity
  • Experience with construction scheduling, project controls, and resource planning
  • Proficiency with Procore, Primavera P6, AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, BIM platforms, and related digital construction technologies
  • Experience integrating BIM/model-based workflows into fabrication and field erection processes preferred
  • Strong understanding of constructability, crane planning, site logistics, and erection sequencing
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with clients, general contractors, engineers, subcontractors, and internal teams
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, negotiation, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • The ideal candidate will reside in Pacific, Mountain, or Central time zones within the US
