Job summary

Highland Electric Fleets is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the design and engineering teams responsible for EV charging, battery energy storage, and edge compute sites. You will own engineering standards, gating, and a scalable delivery process from initial concept to construction-ready packages.

The role requires 10+ years in engineering with leadership experience and deep knowledge of interconnection, AHJ permitting, and CAD tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of related experience.
• 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in EV charging, renewable energy, or utility-scale development.
• 5+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers.
• Ownership of engineering standards, design content, and QA/QC across projects.
• Experience selecting, contracting, and managing external engineering consultants at scale.
• Deep knowledge of utility interconnection and AHJ permitting requirements.
• Familiarity with interconnection standards (IEEE 1547) and tariffs.
• Expertise with CAD-based design (AutoCAD) and design tooling (Procore, Bluebeam).

Responsibilities

• Lead and scale project engineering from qualified site to permit-ready and construction-ready.
• Define design package content and internal gates for stages (concept, 30%, IFP, IFC).
• Build and retain a high-performing engineering team.
• Manage external engineering-partner strategy and performance.
• Set and enforce engineering and CAD standards across the portfolio.
• Serve as senior technical authority on interconnection and AHJ permitting.
• Input to project schedule and budget for design, interconnection, and permitting milestones.
• Collaborate across Development, Execution, Origination, Procurement, and Fleet Operations.
• Drive tooling and process automation to increase design velocity and unit economics.
• Provide due diligence, estimating, and risk input for new opportunities.
