Job summary

AccuWeather is seeking a Data Architect I to lead the modernization of AccuWeather For Business, designing a cloud-native platform while preserving reliability for enterprise clients. You will assess legacy on-premises infrastructure, create current- and target-state designs, and work with engineers to implement key components.

The role reports to the Data Architect II and offers a remote-friendly path from our State College, PA headquarters.

Qualifications

5+ years of experience in data or enterprise architecture.
High-level knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure) and cloud-native architecture.
Experience assessing legacy, on-premises systems and designing modern architectures.
Experience planning or supporting large-scale modernization for production, customer-facing platforms.
Experience designing production data platforms for performance, scalability, resiliency, and recoverability.
Experience analyzing complex system dependencies, data flows, and scheduling requirements.

Responsibilities

Assess the legacy, on-premises infrastructure behind AccuWeather For Business, documenting current-state architecture, system dependencies, data flows, and technical debt to inform modernization priorities.
Design the cloud-native architecture, producing architecture designs and technical specifications to guide implementation.
Own the architectural direction for the modernization effort, ensuring a cohesive approach across the platform.
Develop a roadmap and sequencing plan from the current environment to the cloud-native architecture with minimal disruption.
Design backend data systems to maintain continuity of critical data delivery services during the transition.
Partner with engineering and data teams to validate and implement architecture designs, ensuring security, scalability, performance, and maintainability.
Contribute hands-on to implementation, including developing data models, schemas, and supporting data platform components.
Estimate data consumption, capacity, and infrastructure requirements, incorporating cloud costs into architecture decisions and trade-offs.
Identify and document architectural and operational risks, and design mitigation strategies.
Ensure cloud-native architecture addresses performance, security, scalability, resiliency, recoverability, compliance, and data residency.
Understand system scheduling, integrations, and dependencies, and reflect them in planning.
Serve as a technical point of contact for modernization decisions.
