Qualifications

• Minimum five (5) years of professional coding experience, preferably in a large academic or multispecialty setting.
• CPC/CCS certifications preferred; specialty certification within one year of hire.
• Fully remote work environment; strong independent work ability.
• Experience auditing provider and coder education preferred.
• Ability to educate coders and providers on documentation improvements.

Responsibilities

• Perform prospective and retrospective audits of professional coding and medical records to validate accuracy of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers.
• Evaluate clinical documentation to ensure services billed are supported, medically necessary, and compliant with CMS, federal, payer-specific, and organizational requirements.
• Validate codes assigned by coders and providers; document findings clearly and audit-defensibly.
• Apply compliant review methodologies per ACDIS/AHIMA guidelines.
• Identify root causes of discrepancies and collaborate on corrective action plans.
• Develop and conduct targeted education to coders, providers, and departments based on findings.
• Track and trend audit results to identify systemic risks and improvement opportunities.
• Research coding guidelines from CMS, MAC, and payers; compile into user-friendly manuals.
• Stay current on coding updates and certification requirements.
