X4 Engineering is seeking a mid-level Controls Director to drive BMS/BAS design for massive data center projects. This fully remote role serves as Engineer of Record with no field travel, focusing on high-level engineering and design.

You will design automation architecture, select instrumentation, write sequences of operations, and collaborate with drafting teams using Revit or AutoCAD, leveraging 3–7 years of building automation experience.

Qualifications

• 3 to 7 years of experience in building automation, control systems design, or application engineering.
• Familiarity with major BMS/BAS platforms (Siemens Desigo/Apogee, Schneider EcoStruxure, Metasys, WebCTRL, Tracer).
• Integrator/background from controls contracting is valued for upward transition into consulting engineering.
• Experience with data center environments or critical infrastructure is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design Automation Architecture: develop BMS/BAS packages, network risers, and wiring diagrams for large-scale systems.
• Instrumentation selection: specify sensors, meters, valves, and VFDs for complex cooling infrastructure.
• Write sequences of operations: define how the automation system will control equipment.
• Model navigation: coordinate floor plan edits and basic model navigation using Revit or AutoCAD.

About the Role

Are you a Building Automation professional tired of living out of a suitcase, sitting in dusty construction trailers, and dealing with late-night field commissioning deadlines?

We are recruiting directly for the Controls Director at a top-tier, national MEP consulting engineering firm. This fully remote team is expanding rapidly to lead the high-level BMS/BAS design engineering for massive, multi-megawatt hyperscale data center projects across the country.

This is a pure engineering and design role. You will act strictly as the Engineer of Record—meaning you get to solve complex mechanical infrastructure puzzles from your home office with zero field programming, startup coding, or heavy site travel required.

What You’ll Do

• Design Automation Architecture: Develop comprehensive BMS/BAS design packages, network risers, and detailed wiring diagrams for large-scale mechanical systems.
• Instrumentation Selection: Calculate specifications and select catalog components (temperature/pressure sensors, flow meters, motorized control valves, and VFDs) to support complex data center cooling infrastructure.
• Write Sequences of Operations: Author clear, logical sequences of operations that define how the building's automation system will control chillers, air handlers, and plant equipment.
• Model Navigation: Coordinate with internal drafting teams to perform minor floor plan edits, tags, and basic model navigation using Revit or AutoCAD.

What We Are Looking For

• 3 to 7 Years of Experience: Proven background in building automation, control systems design, or application engineering.
• BMS/BAS Platform Knowledge: Familiarity with major commercial DDC platforms (such as Siemens Desigo/Apogee, Schneider Electric EcoStruxure, Johnson Controls Metasys, Automated Logic WebCTRL, or Trane Tracer).
• The "Integrator" Background Welcome: We highly value Application Engineers, Systems Engineers, and Designers from the controls contractor side who want to transition "upstream" into consulting engineering.
• Complex System Exposure: Prior data center experience is a plus, but not a dealbreaker. If you have designed controls for other highly critical environments (hospitals, labs, cleanrooms, or industrial plants), your skills will transfer seamlessly.
• Note: This is a mechanical automation role. Profiles focused strictly on IT networking, cloud administration, or software programming (Java, C++, Python) will not be considered.
