Self Financial, Inc. in Austin, TX is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to design, build, and own the services powering our mobile and web experiences. You will work with Python, Flask and FastAPI, implement scalable REST endpoints, and collaborate across Product, Design, QA and Engineering to deliver high-quality, secure software for millions of users.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with backend services in production.
• Strong knowledge of Python and web fundamentals.
• Solid understanding of REST APIs and client-service communication.
• Experience with Git and collaborative development practices.
• Track record of writing reliable, secure, maintainable code.
• Strong communication and ability to work independently with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs using Python, Flask, and FastAPI.
• Implement REST endpoints for web and mobile clients with scalable design.
• Work with relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and optimize queries.
• Integrate with third-party services (payments, credit bureaus, messaging, analytics).
• Write clean, tested, secure, maintainable code and conduct reviews.
• Apply best practices for testing, security, performance, and safe releases.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Frontend, QA, and engineering manager to ship improvements.
• Debug complex issues and deepen understanding of the backend architecture.
• Contribute to team rituals, docs, and continuous improvement.
