Job summary

Slang AI is seeking a Software Engineer to contribute across backend Kotlin services, GraphQL APIs, and occasional frontend work. You will work within a remote/hybrid team targeting scalable AI-powered restaurant experiences, with opportunities to mentor and influence architectural decisions.

You will collaborate with product managers and fellow engineers to deliver reliable systems, implement telephony integrations, and ensure quality through comprehensive testing and observability practices.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of professional software development experience, backend-focused.
• Proficiency in Kotlin/Java/Scala and functional programming concepts.
• Experience building RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
• Familiarity with NoSQL databases and data modeling.
• Experience with Docker and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Strong understanding of testing practices and TDD.
• Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills.
• Basic familiarity with React and TypeScript.
• Ability to work independently in a remote/hybrid environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for remote collaboration.
• Willing to take a week on-call roughly every two months.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable Kotlin backend services following domain-driven design.
• Develop and maintain GraphQL APIs for internal/external clients.
• Create robust integrations with Twilio telephony services and Dialogflow.
• Design Firestore data models balancing performance and maintainability.
• Implement observability: logging, metrics, tracing, alerts.
• Deliver production-ready code with tests across unit/integration/e2e.
• Participate in code reviews and mentor juniors.
• Document API contracts and system architecture clearly.
• Deploy containerized apps to Google Cloud Platform following best practices.
• Occasionally build/update React/TypeScript frontend components.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine requirements.
• Contribute to coding standards and best practices.
