Qualifications

• Five or more years administering PostgreSQL in production, including tuning, upgrades, backup/recovery, replication, and incident response.
• Two or more years working in Microsoft Azure, with hands-on experience running Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server.
• Strong SQL and PL/pgSQL skills, with fluency in EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pg_stat_statements, and diagnostic toolkit.
• IaC with Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates, and CI/CD pipelines on Git-based version control.
• Scripting proficiency in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation.
• Understanding of Azure networking and identity fundamentals (virtual networks, private endpoints, Key Vault, Entra ID).
• Experience supporting applications through a full SDLC using Agile or Waterfall.
• Consulting experience and familiarity with regulated environments preferred.
• Azure certifications such as AZ-104 or AZ-305 are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Administer PostgreSQL environments across development, test, and production, including Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server and self-managed instances on Azure VMs or AKS.
• Own performance tuning end to end: analyze execution plans, design indexing/partitioning, tune autovacuum and server parameters, resolve bloat and contention.
• Design and test high availability and disaster recovery configurations with read replicas, zone redundancy, PITR, and runbooks with defined RPO/RTO.
• Automate provisioning and configuration of database infrastructure using Terraform or Bicep; deliver schema changes via Azure Pipelines or GitHub Actions with Flyway/Liquibase.
• Implement database security and compliance controls (Entra ID, RBAC, encryption, private endpoints, Key Vault rotations).
• Build observability using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Query Store; set alerting thresholds to catch issues early.
• Manage capacity and cost, right-size compute/storage, and advise on reserved capacity and scaling.
• Collaborate with application engineers on data modeling, query design, and connection pooling (PgBouncer).
• Produce runbooks and knowledge transfer materials to enable client teams to operate post-engagement.
• Participate in on-call rotation for production support when required.
