Job summary

AARP is seeking an Associate State Director, Community Engagement to lead state and local initiatives, build partnerships, and align programs with strategic goals. This role requires strong cross-functional collaboration and a commitment to nonpartisan advocacy.

You will design engagement opportunities, recruit and train volunteers, and ensure programs meet local needs while integrating across geographies. Occasional travel and remote work flexibility are expected within the United States.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of related experience in community organizing, lobbying, and coalition work.
• Experience with developing and executing campaign tactics to promote AARP's social mission.
• Experience recruiting, training, engaging, and managing volunteers.
• Ability to lead multiple projects with short- and long-term strategies.
• Commitment to nonpartisanship.
• Willingness to travel up to 50% locally and occasionally out of state.
• Familiarity with local businesses, entertainment, and community service environments.

Responsibilities

• Provide advice to cross-functional teams on community strategy initiatives including local advocacy, member/public engagement, volunteer management, and communications priorities.
• Evaluate strategy implementation to achieve the organization's local goals nationwide; assess state and regional needs and develop training as needed.
• Engage staff, volunteers, members, and cross-organization teams to build partnerships and design community programs and events.
• Resolve systemic issues across functions and ensure strong communication within a matrixed organization.
• Develop and implement community engagement and communication strategies tailored to target audiences at state and local levels.
• Recruit, train, develop, and deploy volunteers aligned with organizational priorities; ensure inclusion of volunteer perspectives.
