Job summary

American Rivers is seeking an Associate Director for the California Central Valley River Restoration to lead on-the-ground projects from concept to implementation in the Sacramento, Stockton, and Delta areas.

The role supports the Central Valley Program within the California Region, focusing on floodplain restoration, habitat protection, and water quality improvements while coordinating with partners and agencies.

Qualifications

• Experience in project management, including overseeing consultant teams.
• Experience leading watershed management or river restoration projects.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice.
• Understanding of California water policy focusing on flood management, hydrology, or river restoration preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse partners.
• Ability to manage budgets and tasks in Excel.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement multi-benefit river restoration strategies at scale.
• Manage funding, planning, and implementation of restoration projects, including outreach and contracting.
• Ensure compliance with grant agreements, contracts, and reports; track timelines and deliverables.
• Address technical, legal, and political challenges in restoration planning.
• Engage diverse partners through community outreach and regional collaboration.
• Represent American Rivers in public forums and coordinate with staff regionally.
