Job summary

Newfi Lending in Emeryville, CA, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to manage daily accounting operations and the monthly close process within a dynamic mortgage banking environment.

You will collaborate with Finance leadership and cross-functional partners to strengthen financial reporting, improve processes, and ensure GAAP compliance while supporting audit readiness and team development.

Qualifications

• 6+ years in accounting/finance, preferably mortgage banking or related financial services.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
• Experience in leadership roles or supervising accounting personnel.
• Strong GAAP, general ledger, reconciliations, and close processes.
• Advanced Excel and familiarity with ERP/financial reporting systems.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily accounting activities: GL, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, AP/AR.
• Coordinate month-, quarter-, and year-end close and reporting.
• Prepare financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow schedules.
• Oversee mortgage-specific accounting: funding, loan sales, gain-on-sale, investor settlements.
• Review warehouse line reconciliations and loan-level reconciliations.
• Support audits, internal controls, and compliance with GAAP.
• Mentor accounting staff and drive process improvements using automation.
