Job Description
The Remote Appliance Technician installs, repairs, and maintains industrial and commercial refrigeration equipment, HVAC equipment as well as all kitchen and laundry equipment and appliances. All duties are to be performed in accordance with NMS’ mission, vision, and values.
Responsibilities
- Trouble shoots and repairs, as dictated by sound business practices, industrial appliances used in food service areas, laundries, and other general service areas.
- Interprets preventative maintenance schedules and carries them through the steps needed for completion as noted on computer generated general maintenance/repair work orders.
- Trouble shoots and repair large tonnage cooling equipment used in controlled environment such as labs or computer and control areas.
- Attend to the upkeep and repair of stationary exercise recreational equipment.
- Diagnose and repair pneumatic systems related to building climate controls.
- Service and repair heating and power boiler apparatus including annual and semiannual tear down, testing and cleaning.
- Lays out the installation of structural and functional components and installs them as required. Fastens parts together to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores, and pipes.
- Cuts, threads, and connects pipe to functional components and water or power system on premises.
- Pumps specified gas or fluid into system. Starts system, observes operation, reads gauges and instruments, and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls, and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure, and temperature in system.
- Dismantles malfunctioning systems and tests components. Replaces or adjusts defective or worn parts to repair systems.
- Insulates shells and cabinets of systems. Installs wiring to connect components to electric power source.
- Attends daily safety tool box meetings and is required to do job safety evaluations for each job.
- Notifies supervisor if safety and sanitation standards are not being met.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.
Qualifications
- At least five (5) years’ experience working on commercial or industrial equipment including but not limited to refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, kitchen and laundry appliances.
- Universal refrigeration certification I, II, and III.
- A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.
- Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements which may include but are not limited to hair follicle drug test, physical and fit for duty assessment and hearing test.
- Must be able to cooperate and work as part of a team with fellow employees, customers and clients.
- Must be able to make decisions in the moment with little to no supervision.
- Must be able to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift for the scheduled rotation.
- Must be able to live in dormitory style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the remote camp.
- Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read and write English.
- Must meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather: Indoor/Outdoor. Frequently exposed to arctic conditions.
Noise level: Moderate to Loud
Description of environment: This is a remote camp setting. Employees must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch. Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
Travel: Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.
Physical requirements: Fit For Duty Test
- Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to knuckle x2
- Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist x 2
- Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to shoulders x 2
- Push: push horizontally with a peak force of 75 f-lbs. with two hands.
- Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross over toe touches x 10 each side, self-paced but continuous.
- Squat Test: Functionally squat x 5, self-paced but continuous.
- Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 10 for each knee, self-pace but continuous.
- Stairs: Climb up and down 12 steps x 5 for a total of 60 steps.
- Stairs & Carry: Climb up and down 12 steps x 2 for a total of 24 steps while carrying 40 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced but continuous.
- Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 8 rungs x 8 repetitions for a total of 64 rungs.
- Shovel: Perform a shovel test for three (3) minutes self-paced but continuous (i.e., no breaks) using a standard snow shovel with a 3 lb. weight attached to the shovel blade.
