Job summary

Speechify is hiring a hands-on Team Lead for Android to own core product work and raise how the team operates. You will write code, review contributions, and own features end-to-end while ensuring reliable releases.

The role requires leading a remote-first team, strong Kotlin proficiency, and a track record of shipping robust Android apps with AI-enabled capabilities. You will mentor engineers and drive cross-functional collaboration across Product, Design, and Engineering.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with hands-on leadership.
• Strong Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work.
• Understanding of tests and what can't be covered by them.
• Something you introduced to a team that stuck after you stopped pushing it, and the cost to get there.
• Comfort with the unpopular half of the job: changing how people work and dealing with friction.
• Track record of building things the rest of your team actually used.
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end with design, from decision through to release.
• Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
• Unblock the team when blockers arise and drive progress.
• Ensure changes become the version the team uses.
• Keep shared components organized and well-documented.
• Lead process changes when needed and reduce manual releases.
• Drive verification left and automate nightly QA checks.
• Plan sprints so attention focuses on undecided work.
• Balance review load and foster cross-team conversations.
• Handle critical issues and ensure nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor junior engineers and create learning opportunities.
