Job description

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Air Quality Project Director to lead and grow a successful environmental consulting practice.

This is a senior, client-facing leadership role for an environmental consultant with deep technical expertise and a strong commercial mindset. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing client relationships, generating new business, leading complex air quality projects, and mentoring a high-performing technical team.

This opportunity is particularly well suited for a Principal, Director, Partner, practice leader, or consulting business owner who has built a strong reputation in the environmental industry and maintains an established network of clients.

Why This Role?

This is an opportunity to build something rather than simply manage projects — bringing your technical expertise, client relationships, and entrepreneurial approach to a growing environmental consulting organization with the resources to support your success.

What You'll Do
  • Own and grow a book of business across key industrial and commercial markets
  • Develop and maintain senior-level relationships with clients, prospects, regulators, and industry partners
  • Identify, pursue, and win new environmental consulting opportunities
  • Lead complex air quality and environmental consulting engagements from proposal through completion
  • Provide senior technical guidance on air permitting, compliance, emissions, reporting, and regulatory matters
  • Oversee project managers and technical professionals while supporting their development and advancement
  • Develop proposals, scopes, budgets, and client presentations
  • Manage project economics, revenue, utilization, and profitability
  • Expand existing accounts by identifying opportunities for additional consulting services
  • Represent the organization at industry events, professional associations, and stakeholder forums
  • Partner with senior leadership to shape business strategy, market growth, and service development
Areas of Expertise
Projects may include:
  • State and federal air permitting, including Title V
  • Air quality regulatory compliance
  • Emissions calculations and modeling
  • Greenhouse Gas reporting
  • Emissions inventories
  • Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) reporting
  • Regulatory applicability and permitting analyses
  • Environmental compliance assessments and audits
  • Industrial air quality consulting and regulatory strategy
What We're Looking For
  • 10+ years of environmental consulting experience, with significant air quality experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Chemical, Civil, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Master's degree and/or P.E. or other relevant professional certification preferred
  • Demonstrated success in business development and client relationship management
  • Established relationships within industrial, manufacturing, energy, refining, chemical, oil & gas, or related markets
  • Experience leading complex consulting projects and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong understanding of state and federal environmental regulations
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, revenue, and profitability
  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and leadership skills
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with project management and financial tracking tools preferred
The Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidates will bring more than technical expertise. You are a builder, relationship manager, and trusted technical advisor who understands how to turn expertise and relationships into sustainable consulting business.

Ideal backgrounds include:
  • Air Quality Practice Leader
  • Senior Business Development / Client Executive
  • Senior Project Director with an established client portfolio

An established book of business and long-term client relationships are highly valued. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a history of winning work, retaining major accounts, and growing client relationships over time.
