Job summary

Toast is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for Onboarding, with remote work in the US. You will design and build AI agents that automate restaurant onboarding, turning complex workflows into reliable tools and flows.

You’ll own the backend, integrate with payments, payroll, and hardware, and partner with product, design, and data science to ship impactful solutions. You will apply deep backend experience (Kotlin/Java) to production systems and use Claude Code and other AI tools to improve

Qualifications

5+ years of backend experience in production systems (Kotlin/Java).
Experience with LLM-driven tools in production or serious side projects.
Own outcomes end-to-end: design, launch, monitor, iterate.
Product-minded with collaboration across PM, design, operations.

Responsibilities

Design and build AI agents that complete onboarding work for restaurants.
Turn onboarding touches into reliable tools agents can use to read state and act.
Own the onboarding backend and reshape it for agent-driven flows.
Build evaluation and measurement so launches tie to outcomes.
Ship full-stack changes in the restaurant-facing setup experience.
Partner with product, design, onboarding ops, and data science.
Contribute to technical design and set engineering standards for AI-powered systems.
Mentor engineers via code reviews and pairing.
