Job summary

Apart Research is a nonprofit AI safety research organisation seeking a remote incident discovery investigator. You will surface AI incidents in the wild, document evidence, and hand promising cases to our research team and forensic partners for in-depth investigation.

This role covers autonomous agents, misuse of AI systems, and related phenomena. You will help build a shared incident dataset for safety and policy communities and work on scalable detection using LLMs.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience in OSINT, cyber threat intelligence, threat hunting, or trust & safety investigations.
• Strong ability to pivot on indicators and connect weak signals across disparate public sources
• Solid technical literacy: comfort with web infrastructure (HTTP, DNS, URLs, encodings), log and dataset analysis, and scripting (Python or similar)
• Rigour in evidence handling and the ability to write clear, well-sourced reports for both technical and policy audiences
• Comfort working fast and independently in an ambiguous, new problem area

Responsibilities

• Hunt for incidents across the open internet. Monitor public sources for signs of AI agent activity or AI-enabled misuse.
• Develop sensors for rogue agent traffic. Design and deploy honeypots, canary tokens, and decoy web services and build detection rules.
• Pivot on indicators. Search for signals at scale to map the full extent of activity.
• Track evolving tactics. Maintain indicator sets and meta-analysis.
• Triage and document. Assess credibility and write incident summaries.
• Hand off to investigators. Package cases for researchers and forensic partners.
• Help with attribution. Contribute to distinguishing autonomous vs human-directed activity.
• Build the pipeline. Create repeatable workflows using LLMs and scripting wherever helpful.
