Job summary

Avalara, Inc. is seeking a Commission Accounting Lead to drive ASC 606-based commission accounting for accruals, capitalization, and amortization across products and contract types.

This hands-on role involves reviewing complex partner and sales agreements and building automated processes to scale the function remotely from the United States. You will collaborate with Legal, Finance Ops, Revenue Ops, and IT to implement system improvements, design AI-enabled workflows, and strengthen controls.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with exposure to commission accounting and ASC 606.
• Working knowledge of ASC 606 and GAAP cost classification.
• Experience in a SaaS or subscription-based business with complex agreements.
• Hands-on automation design to improve accuracy and cycle time.
• Proficiency with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) for accounting analysis or automation.
• ERP proficiency with NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday and advanced Excel.
• Ability to explain technical accounting conclusions to non-accounting partners.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed accounting for commission accruals, expenses, capitalization, and amortization under ASC 606 across products and contract types.
• Review and evaluate complex sales and partner agreements for proper accounting treatment and cost classification.
• Identify manual processes and develop automated workflows and AI-enabled tools to support review, anomaly detection, reconciliation, and data quality monitoring.
• Prepare and review reconciliations for commission-related balance sheet and P&L accounts, investigating variances and trends.
• Support SOX-compliant controls over commission accounting.
• Prepare journal entries, schedules, and documentation for audits and financial reporting.
• Collaborate with Legal, Revenue Ops, Partner Ops, Global Analytics, and IT to implement system improvements.
• Be a technical resource on commission accounting questions and evaluate new plans before launch.
