Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Relief Supervisor at the Stevenson Mill in Stevenson, Alabama. You will lead daily mill operations, partner with managers and employees, and drive safety, environmental compliance, quality, and production targets to meet or exceed budgets.

You will mentor crews, coordinate training, and oversee safety investigations while maintaining housekeeping and strong communication across teams.

Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (or related field) with 3+ years of relevant experience, or a HS diploma/ GED plus 10+ years of related experience.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills are essential.
• Excellent planning, organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
• Leadership and motivational abilities are required.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities to respond to process upsets.

Responsibilities

• Provide Leadership and coaching to rotating shift operational crews.
• Facilitate training of crew members in a timely manner.
• Lead trouble shooting efforts.
• Monitor workmanship and compliance with environmental, quality, safety and WestRock standards.
• Conduct accident, near miss, and contractor investigations.
• Communicate status, planned repairs, solutions, and safety updates to mill staff.
• Direct the shift mechanical and electrical crews.
• Help plan and execute outages in the department.
• Oversee emergency work during their shift.
• Provide guidance to maintain department housekeeping.

How You Will Impact Smurfit Westrock

• Provide Leadership and coaching to rotating shift operational crews.
• Facilitate the training of each crew member on the crew to get the most out of training in a timely manner.
• Facilitate trouble shooting efforts.
• Monitors the workmanship of the crews and the compliance of the crew to the standards for environmental, quality, safety, and WestRock standards
• Conducts and completes accident investigations, near miss investigations, and contractor investigations
• Communicates to the mill staff through reports, phone, meetings, and face to face about status of area, planned repairs, solutions to issues, and safety status
• Directs the shift mechanical and electrical shift crew
• Help to plan and execute outages in the Department
• Over sees the emergency work being performed in the department on their shift.
• Provides the guidance and leadership to maintain the housekeeping of the departments

Required Skills

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (or related field) with 3+ years relevant experience, or High School diploma/GED and 10+ years related experience

• Excellent problem solving and analytical skills and the ability to make decisions based on alarm or upset process conditions that may be critical in preventing major breakdowns.
• Ability to select and properly use personal protective equipment according to the specific hazard or hazards in accordance with Company and department requirements.
• Previous work experience in a unionized location is preferred
• Previous supervisory experience is preferred
• Working knowledge in the following programs: Outlook Email, Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office to include Word, and Excel, EPAM, PI and the ability to learn new applications.
