Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an experienced AST inspector to join the Maintenance Programs group in Los Alamos, NM. The role covers inspection of various NM–registered and non‑registered ASTs, reporting results, and coordinating corrective actions with facilities to ensure compliance with SP001 and state/federal codes.
The position advances to Engineering Technologist 2 with greater responsibilities.
This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. We are seeking an experienced Above Ground Storage Tank (AST) inspector for the Maintenance Programs group. This position will be a growth opportunity in support the Above Ground Storage Tank Program and will report to the Maintenance and Site Services Maintenance Programs (MSS-MP) Group Lead. The selected candidate must have a strong mechanical background and will assist the current AST inspector and/or perform monthly and annual inspections on ASTs at the Laboratory.
As an AST inspector for MSS, you will work directly with multiple facilities to ensure the associated ASTs are inspected as required per SP001, NMAC 20.5 as well any other applicable state and or federal codes and standards. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing the inspections, generating the reports under the close watch of the senior AST Inspector. The chosen candidate will also be working with the appropriate personnel to correct any identified deficiencies to ensure the ASTs comply with the state and federal codes and standards. The candidate will also be tasked with performing NDE examinations for call out work across all facilities. The following methods the candidate will be certified in are: NDE Level 2 UTT, MT, and PT.

This position will support the inspection of various styles and configurations of ASTs. The Inspector will conduct inspections encompassing New Mexico State registered ASTs and Non-registered ASTs annually and monthly, to ensure code compliance, leak free operation, adequate normal/emergency venting, preventative maintenance, and follow up on recommended repairs. The inspector will managed the inspection records through PC/Tablet based software.

ASNT-TC 1A NDE LEVEL II in UTT, MT, and PT for Engineering Technologist 1 and STI SP001 certification and ASNT-TC 1A NDE LEVEL II in UTT, MT, and PT for Engineering Technologist 2 highly desired.
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 2 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation (10 years of directly related experience).
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation (13 years of directly related experience).

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
