Job summary

Xcel Energy is seeking an Engineering Intern to provide reliability engineering support at Harrington and Nichols Stations, learning with the site engineers to ensure dependable operations and maintenance of power plant equipment. You will assist with overhaul planning, capital projects, troubleshooting, and project documentation using SAP and Projectwise.

The internship starts May 31, 2027, with potential extension based on performance and business needs.

The engineering intern will provide reliability engineering support to Harrington and Nichols Stations and work closely with the engineers at each facility to develop engineering skills to allow the reliable operation and maintenance of power plant equipment. The support will include: overhaul planning, capital projects, troubleshooting of power plant equipment, working with contractors both onsite and offsite.


The intern assists with SAP work order creation and other paperwork preparation such as one-pagers used to request funding for various Emergent capital projects. Intern will also support pulling and updating drawings by learning the use of Projectwise software.

This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.


Minimum Requirements


  • Current student, Sophomore or higher (as of Fall 2027)

  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in any Engineering major. Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Environmental Engineering majors would be preferred.

  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Non-Bargaining The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 to $23.20 per hour. This position is eligible for the following benefits: Pension, 401(k) plan, Paid time off (PTO), Holidays.
