Qualifications

  • Four years of experience working in a hospital setting with insurance, registration, and collections is preferred.
  • CHAA certification is preferred.
  • Competency in Microsoft Windows.

  • Makes financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance coverage and communicates available financial assistance programs for self‑pay patients.

  • Performs inpatient admission functions, including direct admits and emergency department admissions.

Job description

Summary

This position is responsible for accurate registration and insurance verification in all registration areas at MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw and Towne Centre. It will make financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance and perform point-of-service collections of co‑pay and deductible amounts from patients at the point of discharge in a diplomatic and customer‑focused manner. The role requires teamwork, strong communication skills, and the ability to perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned. Casual staff must pick up a minimum of 50% of open shifts, and all staff may be required to provide coverage at Saginaw Main ED and OP Registration as well as Towne Centre ED and OP Registration, handling registration and insurance verification for all patients who present to registration.

Responsibilities
  • (40%) Collects accurate registration information, collects co‑pay amounts, posts the payment in the computer, prints receipts, balances cash at the end of shift, and provides patients with pre‑printed materials.
  • (20%) Meets with patients and/or families to explain insurance coverage, treatment costs, hospital billing policies, and to inform them of their financial obligations upon discharge. Sets up payment plans.
  • (20%) Makes financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance coverage and communicates available financial assistance programs for self‑pay patients.
  • (20%) Accesses insurance eligibility websites to verify benefits and coverage, assesses co‑pay and deductible amounts, and documents the information.
  • Performs inpatient admission functions, including direct admits and emergency department admissions.
  • Obtains signatures for admission consent, Important Message from Medicare, reviews patient emergency contacts, clergy information, and notifies the house chaplain.
  • Collects patient demographics to complete registration accurately, including documentation of MSP information for Medicare patients.
  • Uses available tools to verify patient identification.
  • Performs pre‑registration for scheduled services.
  • Works all registration‑related Epic work queues.
  • Carries out special projects as assigned by supervisor.
  • Completes all duties as assigned.
Required Education

High School diploma or equivalent.
