Veterinary Teaching Hospital
At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to provide administration and direction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and provide a support facility for service to the general public and referring veterinarians.

Position Summary

The Surgical Oncology Technician plays a vital role in supporting our specialized surgical oncology team by delivering high-quality patient care throughout all stages of treatment. This position assists surgeons with patient intakes and surgical procedures, including preparing and monitoring patients under anesthesia and sedation. Responsibilities include performing bandage changes and wound care, drawing blood, developing treatment plans and cost estimates, and communicating directly with clients to ensure exceptional service and support. This technician collaborates closely with faculty, residents, interns, and students in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment focused on advancing veterinary cancer care.

A signing bonus may be considered for eligible successful candidates.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician ( RVT ) or Provisional Veterinary Technician ( PVT ) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ), or eligibility to obtain a state of Colorado DORA license by start date.
  • Credentialed in the State of Colorado or other eligible state determined by CACVT .
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a veterinary setting.
  • Position must be able to lift 50 lbs and restrain animals
  • Must be comfortable with surgical procedures and managing wounds
  • Must be able to work independently and within a group
NOTE : VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT – Effective January 1, 2024, anyone wanting to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician, RVT , or VT will have to be certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians ( CACVT ) AND registered through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ). Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Familiarity with oncology and cancer-related veterinary care
  • Proficiency in anesthetic monitoring and anesthesia induction
  • Confidence in administering sedations and performing accurate drug dose calculations
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex treatment protocols
  • Strong client communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic knowledge of sedative and anesthetic medications, including indications and safe handling

  • This position administers chemotherapeutic and other drugs to animal cancer patients after interpreting bloodwork and calculating drug dosages.
  • This position places intravenous catheters and monitors patients during drug administration. In the event of an emergency related to the drug administration, such as, anaphylaxis or extravasation, this position responds to protect the life and welfare of the patient.
  • This position is aware of OSHA and Animal Cancer Center standards for safe handling and disposal of biohazardous substances and follows them.
