Job Description Position Summary: The Veterinary Technician I provides skilled technical nursing support within the Small Animal Primary Care service within the CSU Veterinary Health System. This position delivers high-quality patient care while supporting the hospital's missions of clinical service, teaching, and learning. Responsibilities include assisting with examinations, diagnostics, anesthesia, dentistry, treatments, and client communication, while working collaboratively with faculty clinicians, house officers, veterinary students, and support staff. As a teaching hospital team member, this position plays an active role in mentoring veterinary and veterinary technology students by demonstrating clinical skills, promoting best practices in patient care, and fostering a positive learning environment. The Veterinary Technician I also contributes to daily service operations, supports workflow efficiency, and helps ensure compassionate, accessible, and high-quality care for patients and clients. Essential Job Duties
  • Provide skilled technical nursing support including assisting with examinations, diagnostics, anesthesia, treatments, dentistry, blood pressure measurement, therapeutic management, and diagnostic sample submission.
  • Deliver high-quality anesthesia and dental support by preparing patients, assisting with procedures, performing digital dental radiography, and documenting periodontal disease and treatment plans.
  • Educate and mentor veterinary and veterinary technology students by demonstrating clinical skills, guiding use of instruments and techniques, and providing real-time coaching and constructive feedback.
  • Support client communication by explaining procedures, discussing diagnostics and treatment plans, and modeling effective communication practices for students.
  • Coordinate daily service operations by managing scheduling, patient flow, medical records, and cost tracking to ensure efficient clinical workflow.
  • Facilitate a collaborative, team-based environment by working closely with clinicians, house officers, students, interns, and support staff to support hospital operations and learning objectives.
  • Supervise and support interns, volunteers, and student learners, fostering a structured, positive, and wellness-centered educational environment.
  • Promote a spectrum of care approach by helping tailor treatment options based on patient needs and client resources while ensuring compassionate and accessible care.
Conditions of Employment

Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).

Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare.

Supervision: No formal supervisory duties.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Certification recognized by the State of Colorado and through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
  • 1+ years of experience assisting in the direct care of animal patients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with anesthesia monitoring and dental procedures.
  • Experience working in a teaching environment and mentoring veterinary or veterinary technology students.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and contribute to an efficient clinical workflow.
Salary Range

$40,000 - $47,700
