Respiratory Care Practitioner (Registered Respiratory Therapist)
Job Summary:

The Respiratory Care Practitioner II is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Performs all respiratory care procedures including but not limited to oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services and patient and staff education. Monitors the patient's response to such therapies and makes recommendations to change or modify based on the assessment.

Essential Functions:
  1. Serve as shift “Charge Therapist” with responsibility for staffing and assigning respiratory care staff, assisting with coverage, and ensuring adequate staffing levels for the next shift.
  2. Assist physicians with procedures such as bronchoscopy, tracheostomy, and intubation, including invasive monitoring.
  3. Perform CPR and airway management techniques in accordance with AHA ACLS protocols.
  4. Conduct prescribed therapeutic procedures to maintain patient airway, including use of appropriate airways, humidification, secretion aspiration, extubation, and cuff pressure management.
  5. Select, assemble, monitor, and evaluate mechanical ventilators, including troubleshooting and maintenance.
  6. Perform pulmonary function tests (PFT) and other diagnostic assessments.
  7. Serve as a preceptor to new team members and students.
  8. Assess patient’s physical status and perform treatments based on physician orders, explaining therapies and modifying as needed.
  9. Administer oxygen therapy and aerosol treatments, observing patient responses and adverse reactions.
  10. Instruct patients and families on therapy and equipment use.
  11. Procure sputum samples and evaluate laboratory values, including ABGs and arterial line procedures.
  12. Maintain respiratory therapy equipment and respond to cardio-pulmonary emergencies.
Education and Certifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Current Respiratory Care License and NBRC credential required
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (preferred)
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS required; NRP and other certifications preferred
Experience:

Minimum two years as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or five years CRT experience in NICU/NICU and/or ICU/CCU environments.

Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of respiratory equipment and procedures
  • Ability to assess and educate patients
  • Understanding of EKGs and arterial blood gases
