The Registered Respiratory Therapist is responsible for the skilled and competent delivery of Respiratory Care Services ordered by a physician in accordance with established protocols set by the facility or other healthcare provider. The role involves the treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system. Services may include, but are not limited to, initiation and monitoring of patients receiving mechanical ventilation, noninvasive ventilation such as BIPAP/CPAP, delivery of medical gases, aerosol therapy, pulse oximetry, and administration of respiratory therapies including aerosolized medications, sputum inductions, chest physiotherapy, and arterial blood gas sampling. The therapist may function in critical care once competency is demonstrated.
